January 24, 2004
Kearney, Nebraska
On Saturday, January 24, 2004, the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications/NETV, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and University of Nebraska Public Policy Center cosponsored "By the People: America in the World" Citizen's Deliberation, a nationwide initiative of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and MacNeil/Lehrer Productions.
"By the People" aims to energize and enhance the national conversation on America's role in the world through a series of national and local broadcasts and events that demonstrate the relevance of foreign policy issues to local concerns.
Kearney, Nebraska was selected as one of ten communities across the nation to participate in the "By the People" project, in which randomly selected persons from the Kearney area will be interacting in small group discussions and plenary panels about contemporary United States foreign policy issues, specifically in relation to 1) United States involvement in the Middle East and South Asia and 2) the nation's role in the international free trade system.
A plenary panel featured Congressman Tom Osborne, Congressman Doug Bereuter, Professor Andrew Wedeman (UNL), Chancellor Doug Kristensen (UNK), Professor Patrice McMahon (UNL), and Lisa Dominisse (Director for Rural Development, Nebraska Department of Economic Development).
