Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Program

The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center is partnering with the Nebraska Health and Human Service System’s Department of Regulation and Licensure to provide leadership for the development and coordination of the statewide Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Program. This Nebraska program uses trained volunteers from across the state to provide crisis support for law enforcement personnel, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, dispatchers, hospital personnel, and emergency management personnel.

The unique partnership between the Public Policy Center and the Nebraska CISM program has benefits for state government as well as the University. State government benefits from the academic expertise available through the University of Nebraska as the CISM program (established in 1987) updates its policies and practices based on the latest research available. The University of Nebraska gains a valuable partner and potential working laboratory for research related to the support of emergency responders.

The Nebraska CISM program is authorized in state statute through the Critical Incident Stress Management Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 71-7101 to 71-7113.) The Public Policy Center’s involvement in the CISM program is a working example of the Center’s commitment to extending outreach, education, and services to government, businesses, communities, and individuals.
