Expanding Behavioral Health Access through
Networking Delivery Systems—a Faith-Based and Community Initiative
The Public Policy Center is coordinating
a statewide, federally-funded project to eliminate services barriers,
ensure access to care, and maximize resources in the state's behavioral
health care system. A key feature of the effort is the integration
of paraprofessional resources from community- and faith-based organizations
into the behavioral health care system.
The long-term goal is to ensure affordable and accessible behavioral
health care to all people in Nebraska through an integrated system
that maximizes the potential of the FBO/CBO communities. The project
has three objectives: 1) Enhance and expand the capacity of Nebraska's
CBOs and FBOs to provide a range of supportive behavioral health
services. 2) Develop and disseminate a plan for an integrated behavioral
health system of care at the state and community levels. 3) Evaluate
the effectiveness of the project.
The project partnership includes not only the University of Nebraska
and other higher educational institutions, but also the Nebraska
Department of Health and Human Services, Nebraska
Department of Agriculture (via the Farm
Mediation Program), medical and behavioral health organizations,
primary care and regional social service providers, local health
departments, faith-based organizations, community-based institutions,
consumer and family advocates, the business community, schools,
community foundations, the justice and law enforcement systems,
and state, local, and federal policymakers.
The project is funded by a three-year, $3.7 million Compassion
Capital Fund grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Community
Services. For more information on this project, please contact: Mark DeKraai, Project Director at (402) 472-1496 or via e-mail at mdekraai@nebraska.edu.
